Lycian Way East (Tekirova start) - Hotel to Hotel Trek Self Guided walking holiday - Click here to find out more about Self Guided walking holidays

This is Turkey at its most untouched and best. Enjoy stunning coastal walks and deep river gorges, bathe in pools formed by natural erosion, saunter through green pastures and marvel at our ‘grand finale’ of soaring peaks and sheer cliffs – a dramatic, challenging and not-to-be-missed section of the Lycian Way. Of course, if a day relaxing by the pool is appealing, that’s fine too, or walk up towards Tahtali Dagi (Mount Olympos at 1750m). We offer the walk up to the ‘shoulder’, which is a challenging climb. For an easier option, walk halfway up to a grassy plateau and enjoy a picnic overlooking Beycik and the sea. As the week progresses, delight in the Eternal Flames of Chimaera and the ruined city of Olympos. All complimented by the exceptionally warm welcome offered by your Turkish hosts.

The Walking

Start this section of the Lycian Way with a superb coastal walk to pretty Beycik. The next day, it’s down to the coast through deep ravines filled with wild flowers and butterflies, passing the Eternal Flames of Chimaera before arriving in Cirali. With two nights here, you have a free day to relax or visit nearby archaeological sites. Then enjoy the ancient city of Olympos before walking to the coastal village of Adrasan. The final day offers a spectacular coastal walk before transferring to the delightful town of Antalya. On this reasonably demanding section of the Lycian Way, a good level of fitness and stamina is required, but the rewards are immense, offering an unspoilt side of Turkey with outstanding geology and scenery. Paths vary from forest tracks to steep mountain trails, but there are no vertiginous sections.

Luggage Transfer

Your luggage is transported for you from hotel to hotel so you can travel with your day rucksack only. Some days you are taken to the start of a walk and/or collected at the end. These transfers are included in the price.

Walk Grading

Self-guided – Moderate to Challenging, with some remoteness. Total for standard week ignoring variations:- Ascent 3360m, Descent 4255m, 50 miles.

The Route

Day 1 Fly to Antalya and transfer to Tekirova – about 1 hour.

Day 2 Tekirova to Cirali This is a walk of two halves. In the morning, after a short transfer, it’s a long but easy saunter around the headland from the bustling seaside resort of Tekirova with fantastic views to the sea down below. Plenty of opportunities to swim and also a good supply of water fountains to fill water bottles. The lunch-stop is on the beach at Maden where you find the remnants of bygone chrome mining. The afternoon’s walk quickens the pulse as you ascend and descend on narrow mule tracks before finally reaching the inviting sea and beach at Cirali. You are collected at the end of this trek and taken to Beycik. Overnight in Beycik. Ascent 600m Descent 615m 11 ¾  miles 5 hours

Day 3 Beycik to Beycik Today’s walk offers the choice of a full mountain hike up to the shoulder of Tahtali with an ascent of 1000m, or following the same route, you can stop about half way up at a shady ‘yayla’ where you can laze with a book and a picnic enjoying fine views to the sea. The full hike is a long climb, but the rewards are magnificent as you reach the ‘shoulder’ lying below the summit of Tahtali. Far reaching views extend in all directions and alpine flowers are abundant. Descend by the same route to Beycik. Overnight Beycik. Full walk: ascent 950m, descent 950m, distance 7½  miles, time 6 hours.

Day 4 Beycik to Cirali You leave Beycik and spend the morning gently walking downwards through shady forest into an open valley towards Ulupinar - famous for its waterfalls, pools and trout restaurants. After lunch and a cooling river crossing, make a final climb with superb views of Cirali and the sea beckoning in the distance. As you descend to Cirali, the route passes several sites where the eternal flames of Chimaera, steeped in history and legend, burn continually. Overnight in Cirali. Ascent 260m, descent 1140m, distance 10 miles, time 5 ½  hours.

Day 5 Cirali – free day. Explore the ruins of the ancient city of Olympos or just relax on the beach and swim in the crystal clear sea. Overnight Cirali.

Day 6 Cirali to Adrasan This is a long day, albeit a great trek encompassing so much that is memorable about Turkey. After an hour meandering around the ancient site of Olympos (if not visited the day before), you climb steeply and continually to 700 metres near the top of Musa Dag (Moses Mountain). The serenity of your surroundings is very special. After lunch close to an old shepherd’s hut you start the gradual descent back to sea level through shady pine trees following the course of the canyon until you wander past the greenhouses of Adrasan then to the beach and a swim! Overnight Adrasan. Ascent 750m, descent 750m, distance 10 miles, time 5 hours.

Day 7 Adrasan to Karaoz (lighthouse) This is a fitting end to the week’s trek. Starting from your  accommodation you wind your way up through the forest to 400 metres with wonderful views out towards Besadalari (Five Islands). After a strenuous climb you are rewarded with your first glimpse of the lighthouse
at Cape Gelidonia. Thereafter it’s a gentle amble down to view the Cape and onwards for your final swim before being picked up at a tiny hidden cove, for the afternoon transfer (2 hours) to Antalya. We do not provide dinner on the last night so you are free to choose from one of the many restaurants in the city now
that you are familiar with the cuisine. Overnight Antalya. Ascent 800m, descent 800m, distance 11 ¾ miles, time 5 ½  hours.

Day 8 Antalya Either transfer to the airport if you have an early flight or if you have a later flight we have a city walk that you can take exploring this ancient capital of Lycia with its historic old town continuously inhabited since 200BC.
