High Atlas Mountains - Hotel to Hotel Trek - Hotel to Hotel Trek Guided - Private walking holiday - Click here to find out more about Guided - Private walking holidays

Morocco is on the continent of Africa but its culture and religion is Middle Eastern and its future is seen as European, so a great country to visit, and relish in this diversity. Home to 36 million Moroccans in a country almost the size of France there is plenty of space, however a large percentage is uninhabitable desert or high mountains. The cities including Marrakech are busy bustling places steeped in history with souks (markets), mosques, palaces and museums to explore. The countryside by contrast feels like it is standing still, with mules slowly walking along country roads or mountain tracks, with their burden of farmers’ crops or products for a distant market, as they have been doing for centuries.

Hiking High Atlas Mountains, Morocco

The Guide and Walks

You will be guided whilst in the mountains by a local licensed mountain guide. The guides all know the mountains well having been born and raised in the area. He will speak good English and will probably be fluent in French, Arabic and of course Berber. Your guide will be dedicated to you and therefore will have some flexibility to adapt the walks to your needs. You will also have a mule and muleteer accompanying you who will be taking your luggage. He will probably not walk with you at all times. Packed lunch is provided on walking days, as is any local transport required.

Luggage Transfer

Your bag will be transported by mule between the hotels.

Walk Grading

Self-guided – Moderate to Challenging, with some remoteness. Total for standard week ignoring variations:- Ascent 3540m, Descent 4200m, 39 miles.

Extend your stay on the coast

Extend either of the two itineraries with a relaxing stay in the coastal town on Essaouira. We will take you from your last walking centre to Essaouira, 4 hours, and then return you at the end to the airport in Marrakech, 3 hours. Essaouira is an exotic town with its own magnificent beach as well as an old walled town
with an ancient Medina. There is a fishing harbour which will guarantee that whichever restaurant you choose will have access to fresh fish. The Medina is smaller and more manageable than Marrakech so less daunting for shopping. We offer a choice of hotels both just outside the Medina and opposite the beach, both hotels we arrange on a B&B basis so you have the choice to select one of the many restaurants in the town or along the beach.

Extend your stay in Marrakech

You can of course return to Marrakech if you wish more time exploring this fascinating city.

Dinner and breakfast is provided every day, picnic lunch is provided every walking day.

Day 1 Arrive in Marrakech and we transfer you to your hotel in Ourika (higher grade hotel). Transfer to hotel in Marrakech (standard grade hotel). Dinner provided.

Day 2 Transfer to Setti Fadma which is the start point for the trek. Here you will meet your Berber guide, your mule and muleteer. They will accompany you on the trip all the way to Ouirgane. Today you walk slowly up the beautiful valley rising through Berber villages and past stone walls before climbing more steeply to Timichchi where you spend the night in a Berber house. Ascent 360m descent nil 5 hours 5 miles

Day 3 Today is the toughest and most remote day with the crossing of the Tizi n'Tacheddirt Pass (3200m). You follow the valley of the Labessene before steeply rising to the pass where your efforts will be rewarded with magnificent views. Descend to the surprisingly large village of Tacheddirt to your small hotel for the night. Ascent 1340m descent 950m 6 hours 6 ¼ miles

Day 4 Today is easier as you initially descend to a beautiful mountain valley with a few villages clinging to the valley sides, surrounded by their orchards and fields of crops. Then ascend over the pass of Tizi n’Tamatert before the initially steep descent into Tamatert (if staying here) or on 1 ¼ miles into Imlil. Ascent 920m descent 1300m 7 hours 7 miles

Day 5 You have a choice. Either take a day of leisure in Imlil or hike around the surrounding area. You can choose the length or difficulty of the walk.

Day 6 Another pass to cross, this one is lower at 2489m, but still a strenuous day. You will then descend the valley of the river N’ouarzanne and into the village of Tizi Oussem where you stay for the night. Ascent 920m descent 800m 7 hours 10 miles

Day 7 You begin by descending down the valley passing many Berber villages. You walk through a nature reserve protecting the Barbary sheep then continue down the valley, passing fields of vegetables and olive groves. You will say a fond goodbye to your guide, mules and muleteer when you arrive at your final choice of hotel in Ouirgane. Here you can take a well-earned rest by the pool. Ascent nil descent 1200m 7 hours 10 miles

Day 8 You are transferred (1 ½ hours) to the airport for your flight home. Or you can return to Marrakech for a few nights to explore this historic and interesting city. Or take a few days relaxation at the beach resort of Essaouira.
