The Area

This walk is located in the Walking in wide valley of the Enns, Schladming, Austriawide valley of the Enns, a lively river which flows east to become a tributary of the Danube. The principle town is Schladming a modest town of 5,000 people it is known throughout the world for its winter sports. Small villages are dispersed along the valley.

The Enns valley is dominated to the north by the stark limestone mountains, of which Dachstein (the ‘Roof Stone’) is the largest. To the south are the peaks of the Schladminger Tauern.

There are pristine landscapes, lush green alpine valleys and charming small villages to explore, some still with houses dating back centuries.

The area is in the Styria region of Austria, famous for its hospitality.

The Walking

You walk mostly on paths and tracks with some small country roads. The paths are well marked as the local authorities maintain a network of well-signed paths of all levels of difficulty. Our walking notes, written by one of our team, will make sure you do not go astray. Although on the map it looks as if you are just walking along the side of a valley it disguises all the side valleys you explore as you contour around these deep side valleys. The walking is gentle and where there are days with larger ascents and descents they are not steep.

Luggage transfer

Your luggage is transported for you from hotel to hotel so you can then travel with day rucksacks. Maximum 15kg per luggage.

Walk Grading

Self-guided – Moderate, with one long day. Most days you can use public transport if you do not wish to walk, but at Michaelerberg and Oberausberg you would require a taxi. Total for standard week ignoring variations:- Ascent 3090m, Descent 3290m, 60 miles.
