Montenegro North Trek

Photo of the accommodation

We have personally stayed in or visited all of our accommodations. They have all been selected for their great locations, friendly atmosphere and traditional hospitality, as well as the warm welcome they offer to walkers. Below is a summary of our usual accommodations*.

On this trek, the accommodations are mostly small and family-run, all rooms have a private bathroom except for night 2 at Eco Katun where bathroom facilities are shared. We offer higher grade accommodations on 3 nights.

Night 1 & 3-Standard Grade- This family-run 3* hotel overlooks the central square of Kolasin, across from a striking Soviet era ‘brutalist’ style building which adds to the atmosphere. It is owned by an Italian lady called Mimi and her Montenegrin husband. She doesn’t speak English, but German, French and Italian are on offer as well as Montenegrin! Their stylish restaurant is Italian themed and offers some of the best regional dishes with an Italian influence. All the food is produced in the traditional way which is characteristic of this region. Breakfasts are very good, with waiter service and there is a bar area.

Rooms are well-equipped with fridge, TV, phone and hairdryer and Wi-Fi. A sauna is available.

Located where the Bielasitsa and Sinyaevina mountains surround the National Park Biogradska and the Tara River, this elegant and comfortable hotel is located at an altitude of 980 meters above sea level. The hotel provides extraordinary views of the mountains and is an ideal place to observe and explore the local flora and fauna.

All rooms have a private bathroom, telephone, satellite TV, safe, mini-bar and complimentary bathrobe, slippers and toiletries.

Night 2- A ‘katun’ is a semi-nomadic settlement used by shepherds throughout the summer, for grazing sheep and cattle. This accommodation is modelled on a traditional katun. Located on the Bjelasica mountain at an altitude of 1,780m, Eko Katun comprises of 30 or so solar powered but traditional-style wooden cabins, of varying sizes (sleeping 2-7), dotted around a pasture with a larger, open-sided communal timber building where meals are taken. They grow their own organic produce and meals include traditional specialities.

This Eco Village offers a truly authentic Montenegrin experience and staying overnight here will be both unique and memorable. Please note however that facilities at Eco Katun are basic. All cabins feature private bedrooms and are equipped with solar power. Bathroom facilities are shared.

NB If you chose not to stay at Katun overnight you will be transferred back to Kolasin (supplement will apply) and stay at your selected accommodation in Kolasin (See Night 1).

Night 4- Surrounded by the contours of the mountains with their splendid cliffs, two lakes and the Komarnica River, this accommodation was established in 2009 by mountaineer Dragan Gašo Lalović who wanted to share his love of the outdoors and the beauty of his country with people from all walks of life. The menu provides a selection of traditional dishes. This is a good opportunity to experiment!

There is a central restaurant building with a bar and an outside terrace and nine characterful stone and wood cabins, each with two rooms sleeping two people. The cabins are equipped with a sink, kettle and mugs and en-suite WC and shower. Each cabin also has its own terrace where you can relax with the natural sounds of this magical ambience.

Night 5- Located within the peaceful surroundings of National Park Durmitor and with striking views of the mountain of Sljeme, this is a nice place to relax after a day’s walk.

The main building has a restaurant, bar and outside terrace facing the mountain, and seven rooms above. Adjacent, there are five A-frame cottages, with two bedrooms, a lounge and en-suite WC and shower. They each have a fridge, TV, their own terrace and Wi-Fi.
