The Greek island of Corfu is a walker's paradise, and what better way to explore it than walking on the Corfu Trail. It is over 200km long in all is rated as one of the best long distant walks in the world by many. We feature 7 nights on the southern section. This trek explores sand dunes, tranquil valleys and farming villages that time has left behind. You walk through olive groves, past oak and chestnut trees, over rolling hills and along ancient mule paths known as Kalderimi. You are never far from the coast with its dramatic cliffs and long beaches. Corfu has become known for some of its modern resort development, mercifully this is confined to small areas and will only be encountered as an occasional view in the far distance.

The Walking

The walk is always on good paths or along beaches.

For the Southern section, you will walk along cliff edges, on wide paths, on old donkey trails called Kalderimis and along quiet country lanes and across fields. It is generally well marked but our walk notes are essential in some places, This southern section is not demanding, it is 65 miles in the 6 walking days and maximum ascent in one day is 500m. For one overnight slightly off the trail we provide one short transfer to return you back to the trail avoiding a steep climb.

The northern section of the island is more mountainous compared to the flatter south, with the highest peak at 911 metres, which you have the option of walking to. Some of the Northern sections are not as well walked as the south and are sometimes a little overgrown; however the underlying paths are of good quality. You will encounter Corfu’s wildest scenery balanced with its most rugged coastline. Deserted villages and sophisticated coastline with scattered, smart villas will entice and allure. Albania may be frequently viewed and at one point is only 4 miles across the sea. You will walk to the end of the trail at Corfu’s most northerly point.

Walk Grading

Self-Guided - This hotel to hotel trek we place into the moderate category with no major ascents; just the length of 15 miles on day 11 , may make it more challenging for some.

Luggage transfer

Your luggage is transported each day from hotel to hotel enabling you to walk with just a day rucksack. On some days we transfer you to/from the start of a walk and/or collected at the end. These transfers are included in the holiday cost.

Other Options.

You can divide the walk into two holidays by taking the slightly easier Southern section or the more demanding Northern section.

The Route

Day 1 After your flight we will transfer you to Spartera in the South of the island for your first night. If your flight arrives late, you may stay the first night in Corfu Town (Kerkyra) and we will transfer you in the morning to Spatera to start walking small supplement payable. Overnight Spatera.

Day 2 An easy walk today directly from the hotel. You descend slightly past your first sight of the ever present Olive trees to the village of Lefkimmi with its canal side restaurants for lunch!  Walk on to the sea and then parallel to the coast, partly along cliff tops before descending to the beach for a short walk to
your hotel which is almost on the beach. Overnight Santa Barbara. Ascent 290m Descent 390m Distance 12 miles 5½ hours

Day 3 Today you follow the coastline northwards, initially walking along the beach, sometimes through sand dunes. For a period you have a lake on one side, great for bird watchers, and the sea on the other. Overnight Paramonas. Ascent 240m Descent 205m Distance 12 ½ miles 4½ hours

Day 4 Now you cross the island, initially climbing to a ridge and then descending into a valley walking through typical Corfu villages where time seems to have stopped. Continue walking through olive groves and across heathland before catching a glimpse of the East coast as you ascend to the top of a ridge. You then descend to your hotel in Benitses. Tonight dinner is not included and you can have dinner in one of the many restaurants in the town. Ascent 650m Descent 750m Distance 10 ½ miles 5 hours

Day 5 After this brief sojurn on the east coast you now recross the island to the west coast. A short transfer will take you to the top of the ridge at Stavros where you rejoin the trail. You continue to ascend and climb to the summit of Corfu’s second highest mountain (Agii Deka 576m), topped by an abandoned monastery. You then descend on a Kalderimi (ancient cobbled donkey path) to the village of Agii deka and onwards to Sinardes with its picturesque architecture and folk museum. Then you walk on with excellent views of the west coast. Overnight Pelekas. Ascent 595m Descent 690m Distance 11 ¼ miles 7 hours

Day 6 Today you start with more stunning west coast views as you make your way northwards, descending to the coast then ascending as you cross a ridge to a flat valley. As you walk northwards you see ancient villages clinging to the side of the hillside. You then pass through one, Giannades as you enter refreshing olive groves as you walk on the hillside to the ancient village of Liapades. Overnight Liapades. Ascent 500m
Descent 700mDistance 14 ¼ miles 7 hours

Day 7 A climb to start the day, with a constantly improving view as you look back to the beautiful bay of Liapades. You pass through Krini, a sleepy cliff top village before descending on an ancient kalderimi down a cliff to the sea again. Pause before descending to capture one the best views of the week. Once at sea level walk along the coast through olive groves to the small resort of Aghios Georgios and your hotel. Ascent
380m Descent 380m Distance 8 ½ miles 4 hours

Day 8 This may either be a complete rest day or an additional walk may be supplied. The walk is out to the
peninsula at Cape Arila and offers spectacular views and secluded swimming. The trail winds up an asphalt road to the village of Afionas where there are craft shops, refreshments and marvellous views down to the peninsula. A narrow and partly rocky trail takes you down to the secluded beaches of the twin bays at Porto Timoni. After a swim and rest you continue up to the next headland where the trail ends at a tiny chapel dug from a cleft in the rocks. Retracing your steps to Afionas you then descend a winding road to the beach at Aghios Georgios. Ascent 476m Descent 354m Distance 7 miles 4 hours

Day 9 A steep climb away from the beach takes you to the colourful village of Prinilas. You descend to the picturesque village of Pagi before following quiet tracks through open countryside to the Mesapotamos River and over the ridge to Aspiotades and onwards to Agros. Taking time to pause at a beautiful monastery the trail finally wends its way to intersect the main road at Rekini and offers a chance to relax with refreshments at a kafeneion near the bridge before being transferred to your accommodation for the night at Roda.
Ascent 320m, Descent 620m, Distance 9 miles, Time 4 hours.

Day 10 After breakfast, we transfer you back to the trail. Today’s section of the trek is a woodland wonder; a fairly steep ascent through the ‘Valanio Network of Trails’ to start the walk takes you up to the isolated village of Valanio. You then follow old mule paths and forest tracks, often through undergrowth and olive groves to reach the pretty village of Sokraki. Further woodland tracks lead you around a ridge before arriving at the evening’s accommodation in the agricultural valley at Spartillas. As space is limited here, the night may be on the coast in nearby Barbati, 45 minutes further on. Ascent 400m Descent 270m Distance 7 ½ miles 4 hours

Day 11 The culmination of the trek is today’s ascent to Corfu’s highest peak, Mount Pantokrator 911 metres. There is a 10 minute transfer to the start of your walk. The steep mountain trail quickly takes you to an amazing look-out point at the ruined Taxiarchis chapel and its fresco-covered walls. The ascent continues to the Karst Plateau and you are amongst the most rugged scenery on the island just under the peak; a slight deviation will take you to the top of Pantokrator. The trail now starts to descend on an old mule track with wonderful views to both the north and the south from just one point. Ahead of you in the valley is the old semi-ruined Byzantine village of Perithea and a welcome break for refreshments. Continuing downwards on ancient trails through shady woodland you eventually reach the sea at Almiros. Finally, you trace the coastal footpath around to the end of the Corfu Trail on the beach at Aghios Spyridon first passing the beacon signalling the northernmost point on the island, at Cape Aghia Ekaterini. There will then be a 20 minute transfer to your hotel. Ascent 390m Descent 860m Distance 14 ½ miles 7 hours

Day 12 Rest day in this delightul coastal village. B&B

Day 13 This circular route (a small section off the Corfu trail – for which you are advised to wear walking trousers for protection) climbs the northeast flank of the island. A steep climb takes you to the village of Porta and on to the semiruined Mangoulas. At this height the panoramic views and out to Albania are stunning. The descent initially takes you through fairly overgrown rugged terrain but soon you are down at the village of Katovotos before returning to Kalami along a delightful coastal footpath with several swimming spots enroute. Ascent 560m Descent 560m Distance 10 ¼ miles 5 hours.

Day 14 You are transferred back to the airport for your flight home. For late flight departures, we offer the opportunity to explore the historic old town of Kerkyra (Corfu Town) prior to your airport transfer.

The holiday cost includes transfers from Corfu airport – there is only one on the island, to the first hotel and from the last. Corfu has flights from all the main airports in the UK with a choice of charter and low cost airlines. With very late flight arrivals, we recommend the first night is taken in Corfu Town. This does not affect your walking programme for the following day.
