Beijing and The Great Wall

We have selected five contrasting stretches of the Great Wall which cover Restored and Intact Sections with safety a prime consideration. These sections offer a magnificent and unforgettable insight into the different features and surrounding landscapes to be seen on the Wall and along its boundaries. Views are superb as the Wall snakes its way into the distance with watchtowers topping every peak.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (Gorge itinerary only)

In this spectacular part of China with dramatic and diverse natural beauty, extends the Tiger Leaping Gorge - the setting for a world famous trek in an area considered to be the best trekking landscape China has to offer. The Gorge was formed by the Upper Yangtze River cutting a path between two mountains rising over 5500 metres on either side from the river bed at 1800m making it the world’s deepest river canyon. The Grand Canyon in the USA by contrast, is only 1600 metres deep. The trail runs high on the northern side of the gorge passing through quiet villages, shady forests, and verdant terraced farmland with the odd cliff to negotiate! It is said that a tiger escaping from a hunter jumped across the river at the narrowest point still 25m wide, hence the name.

We feature Chinese Hotels and Homestays in close proximity to the Great Wall.  Due to their rural location standards may not be as high as city hotels and some features such as bathrooms may be unusual to us. Homestays do not provide towels, soap or toilet paper. A sample of accommodation is as follows with changes as necessary when space is limited. Private bathroom is always provided. We also offer a higher grade option everywhere except in Huangyaguan.

Beijing and The Great Wall
Travelling to the north of China is at its very best from mid April to mid June and mid September to mid November.  Up to early April it is still very cold and the land bare of anything green.  As Spring progresses, late April sees blossom trees covering fields and mountainsides as trees begin to leaf. After mid June it is very hot and walking the Great Wall is shadeless therefore not recommended. From mid September to early November the landscape changes from green to beautiful autumnal colours and temperatures soften.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Yunnan (Tiger Leaping Gorge and extension) has a semi tropical climate and is possible to visit throughout the year. The rainy season is between mid June and mid September when the humidity is at it’s highest and also the temperature is in the mid 20’s C in other months it ranges between a high of between 14 and 20C.

Getting to China from the UK is very easy with a choice of airlines serving Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Hong Kong non-stop from London Heathrow.  Alternatively, from many other airports in the UK it is possible to fly via a point in Europe or the Middle East to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

From your Chinese gateway city you fly on to the starting point for your Chinese adventure.

For the Great Wall itinerary, flights would be best to and from Beijing. For the Tiger Leaping Gorge it is Chengdu, Guangzhou or Hong Kong.

Between modules, (including Xi’an) you can either travel by air or by train, in both instances we will book these. Train is normally an overnight sleeper and is a very comfortable way to travel.

We will send you details of all travel options to/from and inside China with your personalised quotation.
