Xi'an

Xi’an is a fascinating city to visit and although it has experienced rapid development in the past 10 years it remains a living history book within the original city walls. Called Chang'an (meaning the eternal city) in ancient times, it is one of the birthplaces of the ancient Chinese civilization in the Yellow River Basin area. As the eastern terminal of the Silk Road bringing the Muslim culture to the city and the site of the famous Terracotta Warriors of the Qin Dynasty, the city has won a reputation all over the world. More than 3,000 years of history including over 1,100 years as the capital city of ancient dynasties, have endowed the city with an amazing historical heritage.

Few visitors would wish to miss an opportunity to witness yet another of China’s incredible sights – that of the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. A chance discovery by a farmer working on his land in 1974 led to the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century which unearthed thousands of terracotta life size soldiers, horses, chariots and other artifacts. Created as a funerary masterpiece upon the death of the first Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the soldiers were buried with the Emperor in 210–209 BC to protect him in his afterlife. As a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site it should not to be missed by any visitor to China.

Getting to China from the UK is very easy with a choice of airlines serving Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Hong Kong non-stop from London Heathrow.  Alternatively, from many other airports in the UK it is possible to fly via a point in Europe or the Middle East to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

From your Chinese gateway city you fly on to the starting point for your Chinese adventure.

For the Great Wall itinerary, flights would be best to and from Beijing.

For the Southern Delights itinerary, flights would be best to Hong Kong and return with a flight or train connection between Hong Kong and Guilin. A stopover may be included in Hong Kong in either direction or both. Or you can use Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shanghai as your gateway.

For the complete Charms of China Itinerary, flights are best to Beijing and return from Hong Kong, or roundtrip to either city with an internal flight or train connection.

Between modules, including Xi’an, you can either travel by air or by train, in both instances we will book these. Train is normally an overnight sleeper and is a very comfortable way to travel.

We will send you details of all travel options to/from and inside China with your personalised quotation.
